Oneida County, Idaho
The county was named after Oneida Lake, New York, where the majority of the early settlers came from.
The county seat of Oneida County was established at Soda Springs in present-day Caribou County on January 22, 1864. Because of its population expansion and location on the freight road and stagecoach line between Corinne, Utah, and the mines in Butte, Montana, the county seat was moved to Malad City in 1866.
Oneida County has the distinction of being Idaho’s largest county by both area and population at one point in its long history. It was the third largest of the 17 counties established by Idaho Territory’s first legislature in 1863 and early 1864, with a total area of 32,708 square miles.
